Foster: It’s common to think of ourselves as our bodies. To gain a deeper understanding of who we are, we can take a journey of imagination into our body, which is made up of cells, which are made of molecules, which are composed of atoms, which are organized from what we call protons, neutrons, and electrons, which in turn seem to be simply vortices in the continuous medium of universal energy. So, matter seems to be just a function of motion in the medium. But, what is it that coheres the patterning? Few of the cells in your body were even there seven years ago. So, what is this witness that has remained through all of the ups and downs of your experience? What has remained in your life while all your cells have been replaced? You. The essence of you and of me seems then to be metaphysical, a non-material essence characterized by awareness. The consciousness which centers each of our individual systems and seems to be unified with the consciousness centering every system in the universe. This awareness can offer a common sense grounding to the ancient and worldwide notion that who we are, in our essence, might very well survive and transcend the death of our physical body.
